I bet that if it's linked against libsdl1.1 it won't in fact work
against libsdl1.2, even if the source code can be recompiled to work
with libsdl1.2. Trust dpkg-shlibdeps ...

libsdl1.1 isn't in unstable any more. I'd guess that your best course of
action is to build-depend on libsdl1.2-dev and make sure your package is
linked against that.
