Basically, you should get the source of the package in your home directory. <footnote>I strongly suggest to start with CVS right now. It is *much* more painful to do it later. <url href="http://www.debian.org/devel/HOWTO.cvs"/>.</footnote>
Debian distributes the source of the packages in $DEBIAN/dists/unstable/main/source. A source is made of three parts: the pristine source (.orig.tar.gz), the Debian patch (.diff.gz), and a description (.dsc). These sources can be processed with standard Unix tools, or you can use 'dpkg-source -x package_xyz.dsc').
