Oh, don't worry, I completely agree with the principle and understand
the reasoning. But the sheer number of instances (and the implied
burden for maintainers to repack tarballs or create Lintian overrides)
make this difficult to justify in practice.

I mean, just to take the "DO NOT EDIT BY HAND" string:

That's a lot of work you are asking maintainers to do there, and
pretty much guarantees pushback.
