Apparently you have a SATA controller, so it would seem wise to use a
SATA-enabled kernel. For that you want a 2.6 kenel, the newer the
better. The official installation procedure can use a 2.6 kernel by
passing at boot time "linux26" as parameter. Unfortunately it is a
2.6.8 kernel, and quite a bit of work has been done regarding SATA
since then. To opt for a 2.6.12 kernel (quite likely to avoid
problems), you could use the 2.6.12 enabled netinst image compiled by
François Boisson (as announced by himself yesterday on
debian-user-french as "Sarge Netinstall 2.6.12[info]"):

ftp://charlemagne.dyndns.org/pub/debian-31r0a-i386-netinst-2.6.12-FB.iso

or

http://boisson.homeip.net/sarge/debian-31r0a-i386-netinst-2.6.12-FB.iso

which is a replica of Debian sarge netinstall 3.1ra for i386 using
2.6.12 (testing's 2.6 latest kernel).
