Lucky you: pinning is usually a very bad idea, and attempts to make it
work result in broken or, at best, very hard to maintain systems.[1]
In general, backporting yourself is the easier path, if backports.org
doesn't help you out. Just so you know. :)

In the comments in /boot/grub/menu.lst, there will be a line akin to
this:
# kopt=root=/dev/md1
Ugly as that is, that is where the auto-magic configuration stuff
happens. There is another line, with 'groot' rather than 'kopt', which
also influences this.
