To make your graphics card render non-optimal (i.e. below 1600*1200)
resolutions at full screen, press Fn + F7. You could (and should, in my
opinion) also play around with vga=-arguments to make the framebuffer console
be rendered at 1600*1200.

Regarding your X server, I am rather clueless. I attach the XF86Config-4 of my
Inspiron 8000 with a Radeon and UXGA. I believe that the C810 is equal to the
Inspiron 8100, so that might help.

The instability of your kernel could be caused by unstable kernel-modules. Are
you inserting any fancy (i.e. non-standard-Linux) modules to your kernel?

You might try reading some of the howtos (not only the debian-specific) on:
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html

Hope this helps.
