I have this message, and it is benign.

Try this:

qaz:~# grep "synthesize pci" /etc/hotplug/*
/etc/hotplug/pci.rc:  echo "** can't synthesize pci hotplug events"
qaz:~#

The solution is in the hotplug init scripts somewhere, though I have not 
investigated yet myself. If you find anything out, you should post back 
here.
