On my 490CDT the fan comes on automatically.  Only during heavy runs like
kernel compiles or numerical computations.

If you write to the toshutils author, Jonathan Buzzard (not the Debian
maintainer, that's me!), I figure he'll be able to give you the proper
explanation for this.  Maybe toshset shouldn't require root after all?

Well that's what it's supposed to do, by definition, so yes, it's expected.
Whether you want it to do that or not is up to you.  I don't bother with
--smart or --daemon.  --auto is sufficient for me.

Can you confirm /dev/toshiba exists?  What does "ls -l /dev/toshiba" return?

Just put
     wmtuxtime &
in .xsession, should do the job.

What version of toshutils are you using?
