it is not as easy as recompiling without APIC support for uniprocessors
on all kernels. in either menuconfig or xconfig [at least in 2.4.18] the
APIC option is 'governed' by the Symmetric Multi-processing Support;
only by turning this off and then selecting 'no' to the APIC options can
you be sure no APIC uniprocessor stuff is being compiled into the
kernel. looking at the kernel .config itself i found that the APIC was
truly out only when i had done this. simply having the option grey
[unused] altogether in xconfig wasn't enough to ensure it was removed
from the compile. 

however ...on my i8000, the kernel recompile fails anyway, saying that
"each undeclared identifier is repeated only once". i wonder if anyone
else is also unable to recompile a 2.4.18 without APIC for uniprocessors
because of hidden dependencies? in every other way my kernel responds
normally to a variety of .config options and is not damaged...

Yes, it's APIC, not ACPI. Yes, it works great on my I8100.
