does the same problem accur if you have a different pcmcia nic card on the same laptop?

viceversa, does that card still perform exactly the same on another laptop?

Perhaps with these results with the two cards, there might be a setting thats wrong in the bios when it comes to power saving. Try disabling/enabling it and/or the irq port(s) the nic cards are running on.
