just as a quick and dirty suggestion: have you tried alsa? it solved a lot
of problems on my ibm i series thinkpad - the oss free ess solo driver is
experimental and it's quite noticable. and alsa seems to have reached a
stable state in which you just do ./configure && make && make install and
everything is fine - no fiddling with anything was necessary. the only
things you have to do afterwards is changing your /etc/modutils/aliases.

i guess that the 390 uses ess solo as well but even if it is another chip
- with this you'd be trying a different driver.
