soundcard quietness problems

hello list,

i'm having a couple of unexpected problems with my soundcard (yamaha opl-3sa2) on a toshiba tecra 8000. this is my second debian installation on the same computer - first time around i had no problems. this time i've used modconf to install the yamaha opl-3sa2 module, with the same i/o settings, and installation was successful. however, when i open up the music software i was using beforehand (pd), i get an error message "/dev/dsp: read only. device or resource busy" and i get no audio signal. and when i use gnome-mixer through enlightenment, i hear a signal (for example the cd player) but at a very low volume - even jacking everything to maximum volume has no discernible effect. any hints as to how to configure sound? i've read about sndconfig in red hat - is there anything comparable on debian?

thanks,
nick
