So you want to change something from where dkms works 99.99% of the time
to 0% of the time? Having multiple kernel versions and being able
to build for them is a very normal thing to do that almost always works.
Why break that?
Sure there are some bugs for when dkms has issues, but you don't get
bug reports for all the cases where it is working.
I am having trouble understanding what the problem was that you are
attempting to fix, but so far the cure sounds far worse than the disease.
