Hello,

I'm loathe to submit this bug report as I have no logs backing me up and no
sure way to reproduce the result. But here goes.

Sometime in the last couple of months my system started to reset/reboot
sometimes when decoding videos (playing them), and always when encoding them.
However, when it would occur was not predictable, and didn't occur when the
system was in general use. The system is as follows.

Motherboard: Intel DH61DL, with H61 chipset.
CPU: Sandybridge Core I3 3100.
BIOS: 0117 (latest).
SSD: Samsung 470.
RAM: Kingston Hyper Blu DDR3 (8GB).

There was nothing in the system logs about the resetting, nor in the BIOS
logs.

I tested a few things, such as the i915 module, power connections, etc.

Although it looked like a thermal event reset, lm-sensors, etc., indicated
that it was running well within specs (never above 78C on CPU and 70C on PCH).
However, I started to give power/heat a much closer look. I checked the
output of the power supply, which looked okay. I took the system apart,
cleaned it, and put new thermal compound on the CPU and PCH heatsinks. I
tested it by running a number of "cpuburn" instances, and got the temperature
above these points without any difficulties, while when encoding a video it
now ran 7-10C cooler. But, still, when encoding, it reset.

Finally, I noticed that the CPU governor wasn't the one I standardly used. I
had been using the conservative governor, with some settings from an IBM
Whitepaper I read some time ago. Frankly, I hadn't noticed the switch to the
new intel_pstate system. Since I had governor modules loaded manually (in
/etc/modules), and settings for the old system (in /etc/rc.local), I thought
that I had been silly and that there was a bad interaction between systems.
So, I cleaned all that up and set things up to use the pstate system only. No
improvement.

In the end, I reverted to the old scaling system by using the boot parameter
"intel_pstate=disable", the conservative governer and my old settings.

That solved the problem, and I encoded a video without difficulties.

My setup for cpu scaling is as follows.

Load modules (/etc/modules):
acpi-cpufreq
cpufreq_stats
cpufreq_conservative

Set values (/etc/rc.local):
echo "conservative" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
echo "conservative" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor
echo "conservative" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/cpufreq/scaling_governor
echo "conservative" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/cpufreq/scaling_governor
echo "98" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/conservative/up_threshold
echo "95" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/conservative/down_threshold
echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/conservative/freq_step

Bob
