Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-48squeeze1
Severity: normal

Unable to start Xorg using fbdev driver with this kernel.
The same xorg installation works with the squeeze-backports kernel.
The intel driver is also broken on this PC so the fbdev driver is important.
I have been unable to understand how the fbdev driver works when the squeeze-backports kernel is running.
I will reboot into squeeze-backports kernel and paste in more details when I have a gui :-)
The PC is a Dell Dimension 2400 with build in Intel graphics.

Yes, and xserver-xorg-video-vesa is part of the 'desktop' task so
it is normally installed and automatically used as a fallback.
(Though that is a *really* low resolution these days.)

If you install xserver-xorg-video-intel, it should include the
file /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf which sets this module parameter.
(The default is to disable modeset, for compatibility with older
versions of the X driver.)

This is unfortunate, but the i8xx GPUs are themselves quite buggy and
hard to support at all. So long as the VESA fallback works in squeeze
I think we're doing OK.

Which I'm doing now.

Ben.
