I noticed the same poor performance (e.g. hanging ssh sessions) on my Wheezy box with

firmware-ralink 0.36
linux-image-3.2.0-3-686-pae 3.2.23-1

after "iwconfig wlan0 power off" the performace is fine.

But the problem seems to be related to the driver, not the firmware. Wireless works fine on the same box in Squeeze, even if i install firmware-ralink 0.36 there.
