Hi,
on a Dell PowerEdge SC1420 hwclock blocks on a read of /dev/rtc on boot and on
shutdown:
# strace /sbin/hwclock --hctosys
[...]

ioctl(3, RTC_UIE_ON, 0) = 0
read(3,
Same thing with "/sbin/hwclock --systohc".
