Bug#281218: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7: CD writer unproperly identified

Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7
Version: 2.6.8-4
Severity: normal

I noticed this using k3b.
When booting Linux 2.6.8 (from kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7 version 2.6.8-4),
my CD writer is identified by k3b as a reader, but when booting
Linux 2.6.7 (from kernel-image-2.6.7 version 2.6.7-2) it is properly
identified as a writer.

As I don't know how to decode /proc/ide/ide1/hdc/identify, I just check
in k3b how it reports my CD writer, in Settings / Configure k3b... / Devices.

Under Linux 2.6.7 it says:
Creative CD-RW 8439E
...
Interface type: ATAPI
Description: CD-RW 8439E
Version: 1R09
Writes CDs: yes <<< This is right
Writes CD/RWs: yes
Reads DVDs: no
Writes DVD-R(W)s:	no
Writes DVD+R(W)s:	no
...

However, switching to Linux 2.6.8 it says:
Creative CD-RW8439E
...
Interface type: ATAPI
Description: CD-RW 8439E
Version: 1R09
Writes CDs: no <<< This is wrong!
Writes CD/RWs: yes
Reads DVDs: no
Writes DVD-R(W)s:	no
Writes DVD+R(W)s:	no
...

So k3b ends up classifying this device as a reader, not a writer
(despite the kernel reporting it as at least able to write CD-RWs)
preventing my using it to write any medium.

Although this asumption by k3b is annoying, I think the kernel is
at fault here, for not accurately reporting my device's capabilities.

A friend of mine tells me that Linux 2.6.8 has problems "detecting"
ATAPI CD writers, and advices me to stay in Linux 2.6.7 or to move
forward to 2.6.9.

Unfortunately, it seems that Sarge will be released with Linux 2.6.8,
and it would be a pity to have this bug in a stable Debian release,
affecting such popular devices as ATAPI CD writers...

Regards,
Herr Groucho
