Bug#278119: kernel-source-2.6.8: tg3 driver crashes machine intermittently

Package: kernel-source-2.6.8
Version: 2.6.8-7
Severity: normal

I am running 2.6.8 on a Dell Latitude D600 notebook, with a builtin ethernet
card given by lspci as:
0000:02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5702X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)

For the last two days, I've been seeing mysterious system crashes, first with
2.6.8-2 and now with 2.6.8-7. There are two main symptoms -- sometimes, the
machine becomes very "jerky", like it is freezing solid for a few seconds,
then running normally for a few seconds, repeat indefinitely. It seems to be
happening at a rather low level -- if I type more than a few characters during
a freeze period, the latter characters are lost, which I believe suggests that
the kernel is not even servicing keyboard interrupts? The other symptom is
that sometimes it will simply and without warning lock hard -- suddenly stop
responding to input of any kind.

I think these are because of the tg3 driver for the above ethernet card.
Strong evidence for this is that when the intermittent lockups start
occurring, 'modprobe -r tg3' instantly turns them off; also, the issues seem
to be triggered by plugging in an ethernet cable (which, via ifplugd, triggers
an ifup), though they can occur when there is no cable present as well.

Additionally, about the same time these problems started occuring, I started
seeing strange messages from the tg3 module in my kernel logs; the messages
aren't obviously happening at the same time as the freezes, but...

Attached is the output of
  # grep -C 2 tg3 /var/log/kern.log.0 /var/log/kern.log
(those two log files cover the entire time the problems have been occuring).

Some things to note in the logs (note that eth0 is the tg3 card; eth1 is a
separate wireless card that works fine):
-- it seems to be sometimes misdetecting my ethernet cable as 1000 Mbps.
This never happened before the last few days, according to a grep of
     /var/log/kern.log*.
  -- there are batches of
        tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=<4 hex digits> enable_bit=2
sometimes associated with failed firmware resets, or "NETDEV WATCHDOG"
transmit timeouts. Googling around suggests that other people have had
similar problems with earlier versions of the driver, but their fixes
(in particular, replacing pumpd with dhcp-client, to reduce interface
up/downs) don't work for me. The only really analogous case I find is
        http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=fa.fsoice1.1444rj9%40ifi.uio.no
     and it received no replies.
This also never happened before the last few days.
-- in at least one of those batches, the timestamps are more than an hour
into the future... messages immediately on either side bear the correct
     time. Puzzling...

Previous to these problems, I used this ethernet card on a daily basis for
months with no issues at all; I have no idea what might have changed 2 days
ago. I did not upgrade my kernel or anything at that time. It's somewhat
possible that modifications were made to the school network that I plug into,
but I had the same problems yesterday on my home network, where I _know_
nothing changed, and the problem can also occur with no network cable plugged
in at all. (I guess this might explain the 1000 Mbps thing, though; I don't
know whether that occurred on my home network or not.)

Let me know if there's any more information I can provide... also, any ideas
on how to figure out whether this is a hardware problem? I can just try
booting up Windows and waiting a while to see if it crashes, but this seems
inefficient and not necessarily trustworthy...
