Bug#268609: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7: IDE disk peformance problem

Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7
Version: 2.6.8-1
Severity: important

If I test disk performance on my hardware with this command:
hdparm -t /dev/hd{a,g}{,}
on recent 2.4 kernels I get about 50 Mbytes/sec on /dev/hda. I've posted
actual figures to the boot-floppies list in the past day or si.

In contrast, with 2.6.kernels I see this:
kowari:~# hdparm -t /dev/hd{a,g}{,}

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  110 MB in  3.04 seconds =  36.21 MB/sec

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  110 MB in  3.01 seconds =  36.59 MB/sec

/dev/hdg:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  118 MB in  3.02 seconds =  39.09 MB/sec

/dev/hdg:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  120 MB in  3.01 seconds =  39.86 MB/sec
kowari:~# uname -r
2.6.8-1-k7
kowari:~#

The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-7S2748-L, based on the SiS748 chipset.

The other drive is another WD 120Gb drive (different model), on an Abit
Hotrod 66 card. It's porformance is about what I expect.

fwiw I saw asimilar performance difference on an ancestor to this
chipset in a Pentium system. Then, the kernels were 2.2 and 2.4with 2.2
being quicker. Both use the 5513 driver.
