I've been reading the KDE mailing lists on fonts, and noticed a couple
things that might explain what's going on.
1. Konsole only shows fixed fonts.
2. The KDE font installer currently has a bug where it edits fixed
fonts out of the font paths in fonts.conf:

I think several people have commented that KDE fonts seem broken, and
this might explain some of it. Maybe if I'm lucky it will have
something to do with my problems....
