Not able to connect to my system at home from work

hi ,
I have a debian 2.4.8 running on laptop and I have an
adelphia cable connection for connecting to the
Internet.but I am not able to connect to my home
machine from some other computer via telnet or
anything else .
do I need to do some setup or configurtion to be able
to connect to my home machine via internet .
