Grub boot-floppy / dumb terminal

As usual there are problems with the images.  Could people please help.

1.  Is there a floppy image of the latest grub available somewhere?

2.  When the installation is finally booted into multi-user mode and the
user logged in as root, the termial is dumb (/dev/consol).  I did get into
something more useful, but I have forgotten how.  Is there a way of fixing
this by some script so it happens automagically?
