System hangs after initial boot

I'm brand new to the Debian-Hurd, but not to Linux/Unix.  I just downloaded and installed the latest snapshop tarfile (20010308) and installed that.  I can boot to the system from the GRUB floppy fine.  However, the system appears to hang after a few seconds.  Running the ./native-install script it hangs when asking for the time zone, but it will also hang after running a few commands in the shell.

Some other info:
- My machine is a newer Dell 4100 with a USB keyboard.  Not sure if the USB keyboard would cause problems.

- See the following error message on boot, not sure what it means:
hd14: bad access: block=28, count=2, blockend=30, nr_sects 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:44, sector 28

I tried remaking the hurd fs and reinstalling the tar file, but that didn't appear to help.

TIA,
