Hard drive I/O errors
Hello,
Just got myself a copy of a fresh, hot, piping HURD.
But I'm getting some I/O errors, specifically today while trying to dpkg -i
vim-tiny-someversion.deb, I saw:

The machine then locked itself and a hard reset was needed. I have
previously partitioned and fsck'd the drive to check for errors, and none
were found. But I do have to say that this is a 3GB Western Digital drive,
(IIRC it's at least 3 years old) and although I've never had any problems
with it before, I wouldn't be too shocked if this was the hardware flaking on
me.
Another thing is that on this HURD install, even when it doesn't give me this
type of error (from which it sometimes recovers) I/O is *deadly* slow. I
mean like it can take 4 minutes to install a 90KB package. (This is a P2
233Mhz machine with 64MB of RAM and 256MB swap)
So what do you guys think is more likely? Evil software or flaky hardware?
If it is flaky hardware, is there anything I can do to avoid this?
