keyboard under X

I've followed the instructions for setting up the keyboard under
X, having setup the /dev/kdb file and issued the relevant settrans
command however when running an xterm i get random strings of
characters every time I enter any key.

I've tried with and without xkbdisable with the same results.
Any pointers?
