I'm afraid it's a Hurd issue (or rather, an issue with the design of
fakeroot relying on Linux-specific behavior).  We'll need to modify 
fakeroot for the Hurd, but it's been low priority to date.

I took a quick look at it a while back, but don't recall what the
specific issues were.  Things are probably a bit more stable now with
respect to the Hurd's core libraries and glibc, so it might be time
to take another look.
