The GNU compiler collection isn't as mature on the hppa platform as on
ia32, sparc etc and so the optimisation of the assembley stage could be
described as "not fantastic yet".  =)

I would recommend you join the parisc-linux mailing list on
www.parisc-linux.org and discuss compiler optimisation and assembler
programming resources with with those who are working on it.
