Radio Shark sells a USB to RS-232 adapter for around US$30 or US$40
bucks.  Yeah...the price is steep but Linux has drivers for it...at
least the 2.4 and 2.6 series does.

i have exactly this same problem.  I have tried the uSB to serial adapters in the past on my desktop machine   all i was able to do was to make the PTT/serial switch functions work.  I was never able to get any of the many adapters available to pass data from the computer to the modem or to fetch freq.&mode data from the radio using hamLib stuff.
