I have a laptop without a serial port. I've looked around
and found that I can either buy a USB to SERIAL adaptor or a PCMCIA to
SERIAL adapter. Does anyone have a recommendation of which
type and perhaps a model to look for? I would like to be
able to control both my radio and use TNC's with this laptop.

Radio Shark sells a USB to RS-232 adapter for around US$30 or US$40
bucks. Yeah...the price is steep but Linux has drivers for it...at
least the 2.4 and 2.6 series does.

i
have exactly this same problem. I have tried the uSB to serial
adapters in the past on my desktop machine all i was able
to do was to make the PTT/serial switch functions work. I was
never able to get any of the many adapters available to pass data from
the computer to the modem or to fetch freq.&mode data from the
radio using hamLib stuff.
