Re: Making GNOME 3 fallback mode not suck

It's worth keeping in mind that the fallback mode the Gnome developers had provided in 3.0-3.6 is being removed in 3.8, in favour of a strictly gnome-shell based desktop. Even on systems that lack hardware acceleration, software rendering of these elements is reportedly very quick.

They are adding a few officially supported extensions to the shell that can optionally make the experience a bit more like Gnome 2.x, but almost certainly less than that of the old fallback mode.

Yes, but these won't be available in Debian until Wheezy+1 = in 2 years time  or so. Therefore I feel that some default settings in the fallback mode, which  allow those who want it, to retain the familiar GNOME look, would be very desirable.

Wouldn't it be possible, for instance, to reinstate the behaviour from GNOME 2, to make the panel respond to right-click, instead of Alt+right-click? I am certain this would prevent a whole bunch of bug reports.

Thanks,

Johannes

Dear GNOME developers,

I really appreaciate that there is a fallback mode in Wheezy, as I have
difficulties coming to terms with the GNOME shell. Now, what strikes me
is the, in my view ugly appearance of the panel and the panel
applets. It seems to me like they are using the dark sub-theme of
Adwaita, which may be o.k. for the GNOME Shell, but just doesn't look
right in the fallback mode. I think everyone upgrading from squeeze and
choosing GNOME classic would be in for a shock at its appearance.

Wouldn't it be possible to force the panel an the applets to use the
light Adwaita appearance by default? Honestly, I have been trying to
figure out how to do that and was unable to get around it, so that's why
I though I could suggest this to you (Else, would anyone have a
suggestion how I can get that done myself locally?)

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Johannes
