I've noticed that a lot of packages in unstable depend on libxft1, even though, so far as I can tell, none actually link to it. I manually deleted the libraries, but was able to continue to run any of the programs that "depend" one it. These programs all seem to actually link to libxft2. I mention this because the extra library versions are causing problems with linking in my jhbuild of GNOME.
