try x.x.x.98 for the gateway (yes, an interface on the local machine as a 
gateway).

the gateway is on the same subnet, but on the other interface. _possibly_
this confuses the kernel.
if the gateway to the interface does not work, then making more subnets
would be possibly a solution.

however, this are only my weird ideas. :)
