Package: installation-guide Hi, in the installation guide, at http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch06s03.html there is a discussion of "Configuring Your Mail Transport Agent" that no longer reflects the debian installer (at least as of rc1 or later). In the d-i tree the text is at trunk/manual/en/using-d-i/modules/pkgsel.xml Instead of asking all installers these somewhat complex questions about the type of mail transfer required, the installation program no longer asks any questions at all about MTA setup[*]. What it does instead is automatically defaults to a 'local delivery' setup, if you select the "standard system" item in tasksel. (If you don't select "standard system", exim4 is not installed.) [*] In the usual mode of installation. Questions might be asked if you set debconf/priority=low, but I have not tested this. I'm not sure what form the patch should take. I think the whole subsection should be moved to part of the manual, maybe an appendix, since it is a little analogous to the complexities of partitioning. It's also something you may want to go back to and tweak once you have the basic system installed. I think this change in the way the installer works should be noted in the release notes as well. Could someone duplicate this bug and file against release-notes? see bug #401007 for an example of me tripping over this change. Kind regards Vince

I've added the following paragraph in the "Mayor changes" section of the d-i: <tag>Simplified mail configuration</tag> <item><p>The installation system setups a basic configuration for the system's mail server which will only provide for local e-mail delivery, if the "standard system" is installed. The mail server will be unavailable to other systems connected to the same network. If you want to configure your system to handle e-mail not local to the system (either to send e-mail or to receive it) you will have to reconfigure the mail system after installation.</p></item> Hopefully this closes this bug.
