The message indicate that this might be a problem with the ifupdown
package.  Can you provide information about the version of ifupdown
you have installed (dpkg -l ifupdown).

Also, can you provide information about /etc/network?  Please run
these commands and attach the output:

  ls -ld /etc/network
  ls -l /etc/network/interfaces

I have no idea what can be the problem, but having more information
might provide some clue.
