I was working in a GNOME2 backport back then, IIRC. I remember the Helix GNOME debs were simply low quality, with non-sensical, almost bizarre in some cases, Depends. Nevertheless, they would install pretty well on a stable system and with some difficulty and manual intervention to fix conflicts in unstable, at the time.
