Funky illuminator lib behavior

Greetings,

There are two bugs open dealing with bizarre and unreproducible behavior
of libluminate, the shlib of the illuminator package. Prelink sometimes
doesn't open it properly on i386 (bug 227912), and ldd sometimes can't
identify it properly on ARM and MIPS (bug 222536).

I am upstream for illuminator, and it's built with standard
libtool/autotools methods, meaning gcc -fPIC -DPIC for the shlib and
without those for the static lib. Its most exotic features are calls to
fork() and exec(), and links to Fortran shared libs, including mpich.

Any ideas on what might be causing this strange and irreproducible
behavior?
