There is one important update- command important to intermediate users: update-grub. By default, debian-installer uses grub on i386, the majority platform, and users need to run update-grub after installing a new kernel for the new kernel to appear in the menu presented at boot time.
Perhaps, then, you should mention make-kpkg (found in kernel-package), the Debian Way TM of building a kernel.
