Well, a SMTP only sendmail does exist. But as soon as it also needs to
support address rewriting, queing and TLS it wont be much less complex then
a small MTA is. It would also need a queue runner process. However, I agree,
that most systems only need a simple /usr/sbin/sendmail compatible
implementation, and no incoming SMTP or delivery support.
