It appears that mencoder is only designed to convert from one format to 
another.

Last time I wanted to record something mencoder seemed unable to do it and I 
used vcr instead.

If I'm wrong then please give me a clue as to how I use mencoder to take input 
from a v4l device and write it to a DivX.
