makes no difference.  the performance degradation is due to excessive
disk i/o, which remains the same regardless of whether it's a second
instance of the mta or not.

that works.  in postfix terms, use a fallback_relay - any mail not
delivered on the first attempt gets forwarded to the fallback relay.

it's a useful option for any busy list server.  it keeps the main list
server running smoothly by offloading difficult deliveries to another
box.
