there was a zlib1 for libc5 and a zlib1g for glibc.  Basically each person
named their package on their own.  This was never policy.

The names are now simply grand fathered in.  Some day the 'g' will be dropped.

Yes libelfg could cause a problem, but in practice this has not been a serious
issue.
