As long as getent will never write to stderr if the specified entry does not
exist, I see no problem with using it for checking the existence of users.
The man page is sparse, though, and the source is part of a large package,
so I can't verify this at the moment.
But the original point was finding a tool which determines, quietly, whether
a particular command exists in the path.

Horse-hockey. An additional utility doesn't make Debian incompatible any
more than dpkg does, or adduser, or update-alternatives.
