I think you misunderstand.  If you read that article, it is clear that
RMS was unhappy with the practical problems that resulted from the
advertising clause.  He wasn't objecting to the advertising itself:

"That did not cause any particular problem, because including one
sentence in an ad is not a great practical difficulty."

I don't see how anyone with an even mediocre command of the English
language can read that article and come to the conclusion that RMS
didn't want BSD to get credit or something silly like that.
