unstable+testing: very unstable (SIGSEGV+SIGBUS due to gcc)
Hello,
I have the feeling we have a very big GCC Problem in unstable and testing.
Some -O2 optimizations of gcc cause SIGBUS on aligned architectures (SPARC),
and now even on intel I get regularly SIGSEGVs. I have a few packages which
received those reports, and it looks to me that other packages (not only
network related with aligned structures) have problems.
The latest is apt-get which is core dumping on my system:
(gdb) where
#0 0x40075912 in pkgDepCache::CheckDep ()
from /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2.so.3.2
#1 0x400763a6 in pkgDepCache::DependencyState ()
from /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2.so.3.2
#2 0x4007675c in pkgDepCache::Update ()
from /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2.so.3.2
#3 0x4007578e in pkgDepCache::Init ()
from /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2.so.3.2
#4 0x40098a62 in pkgCacheFile::Open ()
from /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2.so.3.2
#5 0x080572cb in strcpy ()
#6 0x4006731a in CommandLine::DispatchArg ()
from /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2.so.3.2
#7 0x08063610 in strcpy ()
#8 0x401866cf in __libc_start_main () from /lib/libc.so.6
We should be careful not to think, that testing is ready for release, until
those are fixed. I havent heared anything on my bug report #136659 yet. It
is affecting other packages (net-acct) on sparc, so since we want to release
sparc, i will increase the severity if nobody stops me from doing so.
Greetings
Bernd
