I've been doing that for a while now (I was the one who made the
suggestion during the previous discussion), and it's just VERY
awkward!

Wichert, may I request that if dpkg-buildpackage cannot find a debian/
directory, it looks for a debian-upstream/ (or whatever) directory
next, and uses that if present? (with ln -s debian-upstream debian)
