Proper way for a i586-pc-linux-gnu (k6-2) to build for the same

Is there a proper method to pass --host/--build/--target=i586-pc-linux-gnu to debian/rules on Debian 3.0?

I'm trying to compile on a k6-2 for the same, and I can't seem to get it right ;-(

Should I (and how can I) pass -march/-mcpu=k6 or i586 to debian/rules?

I tried 'pentium-builder', but the cc symlinks broke (?), and I started from scratch.

Thanks,
