Unless there really is a deep technical reason why you can't do non-PIC shared objects on these architectures, fixing your linker seems like the best way to solve this and avoid similar problems in the future. If that's not an option then configuring SDL to build only a static object seems like the best way to go for now. You can turn the shared libraries back on once libXxf86dga is built shared. p.
