I never read that smail README, but I did convert a rather complex smail  
setup to exim. You can usually get by with keeping *most* of the lookup  
files as-is, but you can often get better solutions by reworking them.

I can recommend installing the exim-doc package and then studying "info  
exim". Or if you prefer a web interface, look at http://www.exim.org.
