puh, if we have neither sed, awk nor perl then we should consider letting
the boot-floppies package with the old /etc/init.d/network script and
assume that everybody, who starts with the bootfloppies package will
soon install netbase, too and with that the whole base system.
So I make the following proposals:
1. we can use perl
(although, if it will be possible we rewrite it just using sed)
2. (apart from your mail) we make this package for kernel-2.2.x
with it's nice features (when adding a new interface the basic route
is set automatically, too etc...)
When everything is ready we try to make some `uname -r` questions to
support the older kernels, too - but I think nobody tries to upgrade
netbase who is unwilling to upgrade the kernel.
