And it only sometimes (ie some versions) on my S3 Trio64. Most of the times, it
just blackens the screen, and I have to use another terminal to reboot the
machine... 

SVGAlib is known to have _MAYOR_ bugs and security holes.

Why not use libgtktty instead? (GTK interface for console)
